Three members of a prominent Montgomery Township family were found dead inside their Skillman home after a neighbor’s concern about uncollected mail prompted a welfare check, authorities said. The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office identified the victims on October 6, 2026, and investigators have described the deaths as an isolated incident while declining to disclose a motive.

What happened, and when

Somerset County dispatch received an initial 911 call for a residential alarm reporting glass breakage at the Grodnick home at 39 Wild Azalea Lane in the early hours of Wednesday, September 30, at about 4:30 a.m., according to The Montgomery News. Officers responded to the alarm but did not take further action at that time.

On Thursday, October 1, at approximately 2:59 p.m., a neighbor contacted Montgomery Township Police to request a welfare check after the Grodnick family stopped answering calls and an unusual amount of mail accumulated in their mailbox, The Montgomery News reported. Officers visited the residence but could not reach anyone inside and opened an investigation into the family’s whereabouts.

The next day, Friday, October 2, at about 5:52 p.m., officers were able to enter the home. They found Lora Grodnick, 62, and Sloane Grodnick, 24, in separate bedrooms, each with apparent gunshot wounds, and David Grodnick, 61, elsewhere in the house with a firearm and what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Victims and official findings

Emergency medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Somerset, pronounced all three dead at the scene, and postmortem examinations by the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that both women died of gunshot wounds to the head; those deaths were ruled homicides. David Grodnick’s death was ruled a suicide, officials said.

The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office formally announced the victims’ identities on October 6, 2026. Prosecutor John P. McDonald described the deaths as “an isolated incident” and said there was no continuing threat to the public, according to the office statement.

Background on the family

David Grodnick worked in commercial real estate law and insurance, serving as senior vice president and underwriting counsel at Land Services USA, according to reporting on the family. He held degrees from the University of Miami, McDaniel College (where he played lacrosse), and a juris doctorate from Quinnipiac University School of Law. The family formerly lived in Princeton before settling in the Skillman section of Montgomery Township.

Sloane Caroline Grodnick graduated from The Hun School of Princeton in 2020 and earned a bachelor’s degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2024. She was enrolled in the master of fine arts program at the Rhode Island School of Design with an expected graduation in 2027, the reporting said. Neighbors and local accounts described the family as active in private social clubs and local life.

Investigation status and appeals for information

Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit are continuing the investigation alongside Montgomery Township Police and crime scene investigators, officials said. Prosecutors have not disclosed a motive and have not released additional public communications as of the October 6 announcement.

Context: wealth and domestic violence

Researchers and advocates note that socioeconomic status does not shield households from intimate partner violence. The Violence Policy Center, which publishes annual analyses of fatal domestic violence cases in the U.S., has reported that many perpetrators have no prior documented interactions with law enforcement and that professional status or economic stability are not reliable predictors of safety inside a home.

Whether private conflict, financial stress, or other pressures played a role in the Grodnick case is unknown; officials have provided no public details about motive, and no prior emergency calls from the address were reported in the public accounts reviewed.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or visit thehotline.org for resources and support.
