eBay plans roughly 1,000 job cuts in its second wave of layoffs this year

eBay said it will cut about 1,000 jobs — roughly 9% of its global workforce — in a second round of layoffs this year as the online marketplace narrows its focus to growth areas such as fashion, luxury goods, collectibles and refurbished merchandise.

The reductions were outlined in an internal memo from CEO Jamie Iannone obtained by Reuters, which first reported the move. An eBay spokesperson also confirmed the layoffs to Reuters, and the memo said affected employees will be notified in the coming days.

“Our strategy is working,” Iannone wrote in the memo, according to Reuters. The CEO said the company must decide where to direct investments and resources to “capitalize on future opportunities,” language included in the document.

The latest cuts follow an earlier round of layoffs in February, when eBay eliminated roughly 800 positions, or about 6% of its workforce. The company employed approximately 12,300 people worldwide at the end of 2025, including about 7,200 in the United States, according to eBay’s annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Where eBay is concentrating resources

eBay has been investing in categories it sees as long-term growth drivers. In July, the company completed its acquisition of Depop, a secondhand fashion marketplace, from Etsy for about $1.4 billion — a deal eBay said would deepen its reach among younger shoppers and bolster its position in fashion, a category that generates more than $10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume for the company.

Executives have also cited expansion in luxury goods, collectibles and refurbished merchandise as strategic priorities. The memo described the job reductions as part of an effort to streamline operations and redirect resources toward those areas, according to Reuters.

The layoffs come ahead of eBay’s third-quarter earnings report, which is scheduled for next week. Fox Business said it reached out to eBay for comment.
