Ram vehicles face recall for steering defect affecting more than 265,000, regulators say

Show summary Hide summary

Stellantis is recalling about 265,512 Ram ProMaster cargo vans over a defect that can allow water to enter the vehicles’ electric power steering wiring, potentially causing drivers to lose power steering assistance, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a recall notice.

The recall covers Ram ProMaster models from the 2022 through 2026 model years. NHTSA’s notice breaks down the affected vehicles as 44,391 Ram 1500 ProMasters, 147,204 Ram 2500 ProMasters and 72,043 Ram 3500 ProMasters for model years 2022–2026, plus 1,874 Ram 3500 EV ProMasters from model years 2024–2026.

What can go wrong

According to NHTSA, water can penetrate the electric power steering wiring harness, which may damage the wiring and result in a loss of power steering assistance. The agency warned that drivers may receive no warning before steering assistance is lost, and it said damage to the steering system could increase the risk of a crash.

Incidents and manufacturer response

Stellantis told Fox News Digital that it is aware of one accident linked to the problem; the company described that incident as non-injury, according to a statement from Stellantis spokesperson Frank Matyok to Fox News Digital. The automaker and NHTSA did not report additional injuries tied to the condition in the recall notice.

Remedy and owner notification

Stellantis will have dealers inspect the electrical wiring harness and replace the wiring harness and the electronic power steering gear where needed at no cost to owners, the recall notice says. Interim letters informing owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed on November 17, and additional correspondence will be sent once the final remedy is available, NHTSA said.

Owners of affected vehicles can look up the NHTSA recall notice for specifics and follow any instructions from Stellantis or their local dealer about scheduling inspections and repairs. The recall notice is the primary source for the vehicle counts, affected model years and the planned remedy.
